Top Tips for a Spotless Kitchen Sink

Whether you are having a spring clean or you are dealing with some stubborn stains on your kitchen sink, we’ve put together some top tips for keeping your sink so shiny you can see your face in it.

Elbow Grease

If you are looking for a magic solution that means you don’t need to lift a finger, hire a cleaner. If you want save your pennies, however, you will need to put a little bit of work into it. Scrubbing your sink regularly with a little soap and water or an all-purpose cleaning spray will prevent a build-up of grease and will stop those small stains from becoming tough stains.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice has many health benefits, but it can also make your sink look squeaky clean. Simply make a paste with the juice of half a lemon and half a cup of powdered borax. Using a sponge, apply the mixture to your sink, rub gently and then rinse away and be amazed at the results!

Sanitise Your Sink

Keeping a kitchen sink clean certainly makes it easier on the eye, but it’s also important for hygiene reasons. According to WebMD, your kitchen sink is the dirtiest place in your house, carrying more bacteria than your toilet seat. To get rid of the nasty bugs, fill up the basin with warm water after cleaning. Add a few drops of bleach and use the solution to wipe down your taps before leaving it to sit for 5 minutes at least. Once you have drained the bleach away, rinse well and leave the sink to air dry completely before using again.

Know your sink

Your sink’s material can affect the way it should be cleaned. If you have a standard cast iron or stainless steel sink, avoid using wire sponges and brushes for cleaning and instead use a soft cloth to keep the surface shiny and scratch-free. For fireclay sinks, it is recommended not to use harsh cleaning products – clean the sink little and often with water and a soft cloth.

Unclogging a blocked sink

Is the water draining from your sink slowly? Pour some vinegar down the drain, followed by the same quantity of baking soda. Wait a few minutes to let the solution work its magic before flushing warm water down the drain. This should clear away any grease or debris blocking the pipe. Regular maintenance can prevent your kitchen sink from getting clogged; avoid disposing fat down the sink and fish out all the bits after washing the dishes rather than draining them down the sink. You could also run the hot tap down the plughole after each use to keep the pipe clean.
