How a Blocked Drain is Causing Damp in Your Home

Damp. It’s something that instantly makes your shoulders tremble and brings that worried look to your face. We’ve all heard and probably seen the destructive cause of damp in old Victorian households in and around London, but just how damaging is this to your home? And is a blocked drain the cause of the problem?

Unfortunately, in this country, rising damp in properties is a common issue, especially within old terraced and semi-detached houses, which haven’t had a damp proof cause (DPC) installed. You can contact a number of reputable London damp course experts to give you a quote if you believe your property doesn’t have a DPC.

Here at Happy Drains, we have seen first-hand how a blocked or seriously damaged drain has been the main cause of damp within properties.

Traditionally, rising damp is moisture from the ground which has been sucked up through the tiny tubes within brickwork of the property. This then leaves a wet and unwanted patch on your internal walls which isn’t pretty on the eyes and if left untreated can cause long term damage.

Drains are designed to be watertight but as with any product out there, they have a limited life expectancy. Serious damage to a drain, through wear and tear, weather damage or an unexplained shock to the drain system or even blockage can cause them to break or even worse, begin to leak water.

The cause of this damage can be several issues that lead to damp. A drain pipe could leak water into your walls and floors in your property, this is guaranteed to produce a wet area which can fester in the mould and cause long term damage if left untreated, particularly in kitchens and bathrooms.

Our expert Happy Drains engineers have laid experienced eyes on how a broken drain can develop long-standing water on the exterior of the property, which over time can then make its way through your brickwork, which in turns develops into the dreaded rising damp.

If you have noticed rising damp anywhere in your home, or have any concerns about your drainage systems, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
