What could be causing Bad Smells in my Drain?

When outside drains begin to have bad smells, it can quickly become a frustrating issue and spread throughout the entire home. If your drains are causing a whiff, it’s a sure sign that it’s a problem that needs to be dealt with as soon as possible.

Though pipes can appear in working order from the outside, the cause of the smell is often an internal issue. Keep an eye on drains that are both outside and in; if you notice something odd, think about taking action before it gets out of control.

Whatever drain is causing issues, there are a number of things that could be causing the issue and help you to steer clear from any future issues, too.

Toys

Children should be educated into not putting anything into a toilet or down a drain that shouldn’t be there. Unfortunately, small toys and other bits and pieces can quickly become an issue if they find their way down a drain or toilet, and it’s a surprisingly common reason for people experiencing problems.

Food

It’s already been said multiple times on our blog, but it’s important to keep food clear from your kitchen sink. Whether it’s solid food pieces, grease or oil, it should be scooped out and placed in the bin rather than being flushed away. In bathrooms, don’t let hair make its way down drains as this is also an extremely common cause of drain blockages and smelly drains.

Infrequent Cleans

Those who keep up with a frequent cleaning routine are less likely to experience problems within their drains. Pouring bleach down toilets and kitchen sinks every so often will help to keep on top of maintenance as well as keep germs at bay.
